(HEMPSTEAD, N.Y.) – Nassau County Legislators Viviana L. Russell (D – Westbury) and Olena Nicks (D – Uniondale) proudly joined the Hempstead Public Schools community at the Empire State After School Program’s Black History Month celebration, which was held at the Joysetta and Julius Pearse African American Museum of Nassau County on Wednesday, Feb. 11. The event featured performances and presentations by students, a keynote address by Rev. Dr. Sedgwick V. Easley from Hempstead’s Union Baptist Church, and the unveiling of the 49th stamp in the Black Heritage Series and a Muhammad Ali tribute Forever Stamp.
“Black History Month is time to celebrate the trailblazers who broke down barriers and ensure that the next generation of leaders will embrace their vision as they lead us boldly into the future,” Legislator Russell said. “Thank you all for coming together to host such a powerful and uplifting event befitting this momentous occasion.”
“As we commemorate the 100th anniversary of Black History Month in America, it is a time to take pride in all we have accomplished together – and renew our resolve for the work ahead of us to build a more perfect and just nation,” Legislator Nicks said. “I applaud Hempstead Public Schools and the Empire State After School Program for embracing that mission by enriching the lives of our future leaders.”
