(UNIONDALE, N.Y.) – Nassau County Legislator Olena Nicks (D – Uniondale) proudly joined the Friends of Hempstead Plains on Friday, April 25 for their 16th annual Prairie Benefit. Among the evening’s honorees were the Uniondale Fire Department, where Legislator Nicks is a 14-year member, served formerly as a Captain and was most recently a Second Lieutenant.
Friends of Hempstead Plains is a not-for-profit organization dedicated to the restoration, protection and preservation of the remaining acres of Hempstead Plains – which previously covered central Nassau and is Long Island’s last prairie. This includes the Francis T. Purcell Preserve, whose namesake was Nassau County Executive from 1978 through 1987.
“Both ecologically and historically, Hempstead Plains is one of Nassau County’s most important expanses of open space – and the Uniondale community is deeply passionate about its preservation,” Legislator Nicks said. “It was a pleasure to join the leaders of this outstanding organization in recognizing my colleagues at the Uniondale Fire Department and thanking everyone who does so much to enhance one of Nassau’s natural treasures.”
