(GLEN COVE, N.Y.) – Five hundred backpacks were distributed at The Landing School in Glen Cove during an annual back-to-school backpack giveaway hosted by Nassau County Legislature Minority Leader Delia DeRiggi-Whitton (D - Glen Cove), the Nassau County Police Benevolent Association (PBA), the Glen Cove PBA and the Glen Cove City School District on Tuesday, Aug. 18.

Backpacks and school supplies were donated by the Nassau PBA, which helped hundreds of families get a strong start to the 2026-27 school year. Glen Cove PBA members provided event-day assistance with traffic control as families walked and drove up to the school. Additional backpacks were provided to the Glen Cove Youth Bureau and the Crime Victims Center in support of their back-to-school outreach initiatives.

“It’s just a really nice way to make a partnership with community members and to ensure that students are prepared and ready to go for school,” said Landing School Principal Rebecca Carfora. “Seeing the smiles on kids’ faces is so important and meaningful, and it really reinforces that being ready and prepared and organized is a great way to start the school year.”

“This event gives our families the convenience to come by and pick up a backpack in preparation for a new school year, and we appreciate Legislator DeRiggi-Whitton and the Nassau PBA for choosing our district,” Glen Cove City Schools Superintendent Dr. Alexa Doeschner said.

“It’s great for us to get involved in the community and give back to the community that been so good to us and supportive of us in the past,” Nassau PBA Corresponding Secretary John Paterson said. “We’ve been partnering with Legislator DeRiggi-Whitton for approximately seven years now, and this is one of the most successful ones we do in the County. We’re glad to be back, and I hope the kids have a great and safe school year.”

“To see the excitement on the kids’ faces and see their interactions with the Nassau County and Glen Cove Police Departments – it’s really heartwarming, and they’re so excited,” Minority Leader DeRiggi-Whitton said. “Times are tough for many, many, and we all are feeling the crunch. I feel so grateful that we are able do our part to help local families with the generous support of the Nassau County PBA.”
