(PORT WASHINGTON, N.Y.) – Nassau County Legislature Minority Leader Delia DeRiggi-Whitton (D – Glen Cove) joined leaders of Plant A Row for the Hungry at the Port Washington Public Library on Wednesday, Feb. 4 to celebrate the launch of their fourth annual gallery exhibition featuring the photographs of local artists Safia Fatimi, Andy Small and Susan Tiffen.
Founded in 2010 by Marvin Makofsky, Plant a Row’s mission is to “mobilize the Port Washington community to grow and distribute locally grown produce to our food-insecure families and impact climate change as it relates to growing food.” Alper’s Hardware – a more than 110-year staple of the Port Washington community – is the current drop-off site for the program’s philanthropic green-thumbs.
In late 2024, Minority Leader DeRiggi-Whitton secured $50,000 in federal American Rescue Plan Act (ARPA) funding to support their mission of combating food insecurity in the region.
“As the old saying goes, ‘a picture is worth a thousand words,’ and this exhibition says more than words ever could about the tremendous impact that Plant A Row makes for so many families in our community,” Minority Leader DeRiggi-Whitton said. “It was a pleasure to celebrate this milestone with Marv and his wonderful team of volunteers, and I am proud to stand in support of them and their amazing work!”
