GLEN COVE, N.Y.) - Nassau County Legislature Minority Leader Delia DeRiggi-Whitton (D – Glen Cove) secured the unanimous passage of a $99,999 Community Revitalization Project (CRP) grant for the City of Glen Cove School District on Monday, July 27.
The funds will be applied toward the construction of a playground for K-2 students at the Gribbin Elementary School. The playground will be tailored to the sensory and developmental needs of students in the building’s 8:1:1 special education classes and will feature adaptive play equipment, sensory friendly components, and accessibility modifications.
These funds will build an outdoor space designed for every young learner at Gribbin. The adaptive equipment, sensory features, and accessible pathways are built for students with disabilities, but they benefit all children. The space gives teachers a place to build the social, sensory, and physical skills that a classroom alone cannot reach,” said Glen Cove City Schools Superintendent Dr. Alexa Doeschner. “Accessible outdoor play areas are still rare across our elementary campuses, so Gribbin can serve as a shared resource and a model for inclusive play district wide. The impact also reaches families and neighbors. Siblings will use it after school, and families will gather here on weekends. It gives every family a clear signal that their child has a place made for them in Glen Cove. We are grateful to Minority Leader Delia DeRiggi-Whitton for championing this project and for her steady commitment to the children of Glen Cove. Her support makes a real difference for our youngest students, and we thank her for helping us give them a place to grow, play, and belong.
