[ARCHIVED] Mulé Applauds Removal of Invasive, Odoriferous Overgrowth from Baldwin’s Lofts Pond

Legislator Mule - Lofts Pond Spatterdock

(BADLWIN, N.Y.) – Nassau County Legislator Debra Mulé (D – Freeport) is pleased to announce that Nassau County’s Department of Public Works has embarked upon a project to remove growths of invasive spatterdock from Baldwin’s Lofts Pond. Work began on Earth Day - Friday, April 22 - and is expected to be completed later this week (weather permitting).

Spatterdock is an invasive water lily that disrupts aquatic ecosystems and emits an oppressive, offensive odor that prevented residents from enjoying the park or using their backyards. In May 2020, federal officials authorized Nassau County to remove up to 75 percent of the invasive overgrowth; however, the project was delayed because of the COVID-19 pandemic.

“This important project will restore ecological balance to Lofts Pond, make the park much more attractive to visitors, and greatly improve quality of life for the residents who live next to the pond,” Legislator Mulé said. “Thank you to the Department of Public Works for their efforts to complete this long-awaited project in time for the spring and summer months!”
