WHAT – Nassau County Legislator Viviana L. Russell (D – Westbury) is joining forces with educational leaders, local sponsors, and her colleagues in government to commemorate Haitian Flag Day in Uniondale and Westbury/New Cassel.
Haitian Flag Day marks May 18, 1804 – the date upon which the Republic of Haiti earned its independence from France and flew its flag for the first time. In doing so, Haiti became the world’s first independent, Black-led republic.
“For generations, the Haitian diaspora has distinguished itself through its courage, determination, and resilience. At a time of unprecedented challenges in the United States, the significance of Haitian Flag Day is more profound than ever,” Legislator Russell said. “As the proud representative of some of Nassau County’s most vibrant Haitian communities, I encourage everyone to join us to honor this historic and momentous occasion.”
