(HEMPSTEAD, UNIONDALE and NEW CASSEL, N.Y.) - Nassau County Legislator Viviana L. Russell (D – Westbury) joined forces with educational leaders, local sponsors, her colleagues in government, and over 1,000 community members in celebrating Haitian Flag Day in Hempstead, Uniondale, and New Cassel.

Legislator Russell proudly joined the community at the Joysetta and Julius Pearse African American Museum of Nassau County on Saturday, May 16. She also co-sponsored events in partnership with the Uniondale Union Free School District at the Cornelius Court Elementary School on Saturday, May 16, and a New Cassel block party on Sunday, May 17th in partnership with Councilman Robert Troiano, the Town of North Hempstead, the Westbury Union Free School District, and the Quiescere Resource Center. Long Island Cares was additionally on hand to host a food distribution event.

Haitian Flag Day marks May 18, 1804 – the date upon which the Republic of Haiti earned its independence from France and flew its flag for the first time. In doing so, Haiti became the world’s first independent, Black-led republic. At all three events, the momentous occasion was marked with educational activities, artistic displays, musical performances, cultural presentations, authentic cuisine, and more. Some of the highlights were an educational presentation on the historical contributions of Haitians in America dating back to the Revolutionary War; poetry and performances by Uniondale and Westbury School District students and world-renowned Haitian Artist Darline Desca.

“For generations, the Haitian diaspora has distinguished itself through its courage, determination, and resilience – and at this time of unprecedented challenges in the United States, the significance of Haitian Flag Day is more profound than ever,” Legislator Russell said. “The unity that was on display this weekend was powerful and deeply inspiring, and I am proud to serve some of our region’s largest and most vibrant Haitian communities. Thank you to all of our partners for celebrating with us and contributing to the success of these events!”
