Sunday, May 17th’s Haitian Flag Day Celebration in New Cassel was truly one for the books — and I want to sincerely thank every volunteer, sponsor, performer, vendor, community partner, public safety official, and resident who played a role in making it the BEST Haitian Flag Day celebration yet.
The weather was beautiful, the energy was unmatched, and the pride throughout the community was undeniable. For so many, Haitian Flag Day is celebrated with the same spirit and love that Independence Day represents in America — a celebration of freedom, culture, resilience, history, and identity.
More than a decade ago, this celebration began with a simple idea: to acknowledge and uplift the presence and contributions of the Haitian community in New Cassel and neighboring communities. Today, in 2026, we continue to rise above every attempt to disrespect or disregard our Haitian brothers and sisters — despite the immeasurable contributions Haitians have made throughout history, dating back to the Revolutionary War.
And on Sunday, May 17, we stood tall together.
I truly believe we welcomed over 1,000 people celebrating proudly — singing, dancing, smiling, eating, embracing one another, and showing what community really looks like.
When I say I LOVE my community, I really, really, really LOVE my community.
From Haitian Flag Day celebrations to the many events throughout our legislative district this season, I remain grateful to serve and stand beside communities that continue to show strength, culture, unity, and love.
Sincerely,
Viviana L. Russell
