(WESTBURY, N.Y.) – Nassau County Legislator Viviana L. Russell (D – Westbury) joined the Westbury community and her colleagues in government for the Saturday, July 11 dedication of the Westbury Fire Department’s new Line of Duty memorial at the Maple Avenue firehouse.
The memorial, which pays tribute to the members of the Department who lost their lives while serving the community or as a result of their service, was dedicated on the 100th anniversary of the death of firefighter Thomas Manley, who perished while responding to a blaze in Old Westbury a century ago.
In September of 2025, the Legislature approved a $162,150 in Community Revitalization Project (CRP) grant to assist in the construction of the memorial, which consists of a bronze statue of a kneeling, life-sized firefighter, benches, LED lighting, 25- and 30-foot flagpoles, and brickwork around the monument. Legislator Russell completed the process of delivering these funds to the Westbury Fire Department, which was initiated by former Nassau County Legislator and current New York State Senator Siela A. Bynoe.
“Every time our hometown heroes answer the call of duty, they do so while facing the reality that they are rushing toward tremendous danger, but their passion for serving and protecting others is paramount,” Legislator Russell said. “With the 25th anniversary of the September 11 terror attacks fast approaching, it was especially meaningful to pause and join with my community to dedicate this beautiful and poignant tribute to all who made the ultimate sacrifice while helping others in their greatest hour of need.”
