(HEMPSTEAD, N.Y.) – In commemoration of Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr. Day in America, Nassau County Legislators Scott M. Davis (D -Rockville Centre) and Viviana L. Russell (D -Westbury) proudly joined their colleagues in government and the community at Kennedy Memorial Park on Thursday, Jan. 22 to honor Roosevelt’s Dr. Emily Moore.
The celebration included a discussion with Dr. Moore, performances by local youth, a Q-and-A session with Dr. Moore, and a book signing for “My Journey,” the Ayanna Moore-penned biography chronicling Dr. Moore’s more than 60 years of civil rights advocacy and dedication to youth enrichment through her Alliance Junior Tennis program
“As a fearless civil rights advocate, community leader and champion for the children of Roosevelt, Dr. Emily Moore is a hometown hero who showed us the power of using our voices for the greater good,” Legislator Davis said. “Her life’s work is a beacon for all of us to follow at a time when courage and moral clarity are essential, and I applaud her for continuing to give so freely of herself to build a better future for us all.”
“Dr. Emily Moore is the embodiment of what Maya Angelou meant when she wrote of a ‘Phenomenal Woman’ – she is courageous, conscientious, and unwavering in her commitment to uplifting the lives of all she encounters,” Legislator Russell said. “It was a privilege to join my colleagues and the community in celebrating a true pioneer who is unwavering in her advocacy.”
