(UNIONDALE, N.Y.). – Nassau County Legislator Viviana L. Russell (D–Westbury) officially began her first term representing the residents of Legislative District 2 during inauguration ceremonies held at Uniondale’s Cradle of Aviation Museum on Thursday, January 8.
The newly reapportioned District 2 includes the communities of Westbury, New Cassel, Uniondale, Carle Place, Hempstead Village, Hicksville, and Jericho.
During the County’s formal inauguration, New York State Comptroller Hon. Thomas P. DiNapoli administered the oath of office to the Minority Caucus legislators. The Minority Leader, Delia DeRiggi Whitton was sworn in separately by her father, retired Judge Donald DeRiggi.
Following the County ceremony, Legislator Russell held a more intimate ceremonial swearing-in surrounded by family members, close friends, and supporters. That ceremony was officiated by her cousin, Rev. Karen Starks, reflecting Russell’s deep personal and spiritual roots in the community she serves.
“District 2 is home to some of our region’s most significant educational, cultural, and economic institutions and serves as a major center of growth and activity,” Legislator Russell said. “With that growth come important challenges, including housing accessibility, downtown revitalization, infrastructure improvements, economic development, PILOT agreements, and protecting a woman’s right to choose. These challenges are real—but so is our readiness. I am honored to continue my journey of public service on behalf of the residents of District 2.”
Legislator Russell brings decades of community advocacy and public service experience to the Nassau County Legislature and looks forward to working collaboratively with residents, colleagues, and stakeholders to deliver thoughtful, community-centered solutions.
