(UNIONDALE, N.Y.) – Nassau County Legislator Viviana L. Russell (D – Westbury) joined the Uniondale community for back-to-school celebrations at Northern Parkway Elementary School and Turtle Hook and Lawrence Road Middle Schools on Friday, Aug. 21 and Saturday, Aug. 22. Legislator Russell assisted volunteers with distributing backpacks and school supplies during the events, which featured activities, giveaways, refreshments, free haircuts, and more.
Legislator Russell also enjoyed engaging and thought-provoking conversations with young members of the My Brother’s Keeper program, as well as representatives of the Kappa Phi Chapter of Alpha Kappa Alpha Sorority, Inc., the Xi Psi Chapter of Alpha Phi Alpha Fraternity, Inc., and the Sigma Mu Chapter of Alpha Phi Alpha Fraternity, Inc., all of whom who were on hand to support and encourage fellow students as they prepare for the school year ahead.
“By giving our young scholars the tools they need for the new school year, we are preparing them to succeed and sending a powerful message that their community supports them in all they do, ” Legislator Russell said. “As rising prices place a growing strain on family budgets, it was a pleasure to be part of events that help ease that burden while surrounding our students with mentors, community leaders, and resources that encourage them to thrive confidently in the new school year. Thank you to Superintendent Dr. Monique Darrisaw-Akil, JetBlue, My Brother's Keeper and all of the wonderful sponsors and volunteers that made these events possible."
