(GARDEN CITY, N.Y.) – Nassau County Legislator Viviana L. Russell (D – Westbury) proudly supported the Homegrown Heroes of Long Island’s fundraising celebration at Adelphi University’s Performing Arts Center on Saturday, March 14.
The event, showcasing 38 Black alumni of the region’s high schools who are now working professionals making contributions to their fields or communities, also featured performances by the Westbury Middle School Choir and Uniondale’s acclaimed Rhythm of the Knight Show Choir. The photo gallery was curated by Ms. Shirley Darkeh and sponsored by The Long Island African American Chamber of Commerce and the African American Small Business Foundation, Inc.
When asked about her motivation for this exhibit, Ms. Darkeh shared that she "felt that it was necessary for our young people to see African Americans who are successful, especially since the goal right now is to eradicate our history."
“The amazing talents of our gifted young musicians truly set the tone for an inspiring and uplifting evening celebrating the hometown leaders who work so diligently to build a stronger future for communities across Nassau County and our region,” Legislator Russell said. “It was truly an honor to be part of the Homegrown Heroes event. I extend my sincere gratitude to Ms. Shirley Darkeh for her visionary leadership in creating a platform that allows Black individuals to see reflections of success that look like them.”
