[ARCHIVED] Legislator Mulé Presents “Women in Politics – Our Journey”

(FREEPORT, N.Y.) – Nassau County Legislator Debra Mulé (D – Freeport) hosted “Women in Politics: Our Journey,” a Friday, March 26 panel discussion featuring a quintet of female Nassau County elected leaders sharing their life experiences in pursuit of public office.

Held in observance of March as Women’s History Month, the panel of elected officials – each of whom represents part or all of the Fifth Legislative District – included Nassau County Executive Laura Curran; Village of Rockville Centre Deputy Mayor Kathy Baxley; Freeport School Board President Vilma Lancaster; and Baldwin School Board Trustee Annie Doresca. Their discussion is archived online at

Topics of conversation included motivations for seeking public office and challenges they faced in doing so; motherhood as a bridge to volunteerism, community service and elected office; lessons learned after becoming an elected official; advice for young women with political aspirations; the importance of mentorship; leadership challenges during the COVID-19 pandemic, and more.

“As women continue to pursue public office in increasing numbers across the country, I could think of no better way to honor Women’s History Month than to assemble this impressive panel and share their experiences and knowledge with the world,” Legislator Mulé said. “I thank our guests for joining me in an important exploration of what motivates and inspires them to serve the community.”

The virtual panel discussion culminated Legislator Mulé’s observance of Women’s History Month. Throughout the month of March, County Executive Curran and Deputy Mayor Baxley were featured in a Women of Distinction spotlight series on Legislator Mulé’s social media platforms, as was Baldwin community leader Erika Hill.
