(VALLEY STREAM, N.Y.) – Nassau County Legislator Carrié Solages (D – Valley Stream) joined with New York State Assemblywoman Michaelle Solages and the Haitian American Family of Long Island, Inc. to celebrate May as Haitian Heritage Month at the Valley Stream VFW on Friday, May 9.
Held ahead of Haitian Flag Day, which is observed on Sunday, May 18, the evening celebration featured fine art, dancing, cultural spotlights and more. Spirits were especially high thanks to the recent ascension of Pope Leo XIV, whose Haitian roots are a source of tremendous pride within the diaspora.
“Haitian Americans are a vital thread that strengthen the rich cultural tapestries found here in Nassau County and all across America,” said Legislator Solages, who in 2012 became the first Haitian American to serve in the Nassau County Legislature. “Let this celebration of our heritage renew our commitment across the diaspora to supporting the people of our beloved homeland in the fight to restore peace and prosperity to the Caribbean’s first independent republic.”
