(LAKEVIEW, N.Y.) – Frustrated by nearly a week of inaction from Nassau County Executive Bruce Blakeman’s administration in clearing an essential Southern State Parkway overpass walkway in Lakeview, Nassau County Legislator Carrié Solages (D – Valley Stream) took matters into his own hands.
On Friday, Jan. 30, with traffic control assistance from the Nassau County Auxiliary Police, Legislator Solages and his team removed snow – untouched since the previous weekend’s weather – from the Woodfield Road sidewalks on the Southern State Parkway overpass, clearing the way for pedestrians who rely upon the path daily. Legislator Solages said that the overpass was just another example of inequitable and inefficient use of snow removal resources by both the County and the Town of Hempstead.
“By that point, it had been five days, which was more than enough time to clear the snow,” Legislator Solages said. “It is unacceptable that pedestrians were forced to put their lives at risk and walk in the street because the sidewalk was covered in ice, and something had to get done. Because I had to take matters into my own hands, the County finally got around to removing the snow on this road five days after the storm.”
