Today’s Supreme Court ruling allowing the Trump administration to move forward with terminating Temporary Protected Status (TPS) is devastating in many ways.
It is a tremendous loss for Long Island and our regional economy, which is supported by thousands of TPS holders who make tremendous professional contributions each day, especially the healthcare field.
The reality is clear: Haiti remains far too dangerous for its people to return. The United States continues to maintain its highest-level travel advisory for Haiti due to rampant gang violence, kidnappings, civil unrest, and life-threatening conditions. If Haiti is too dangerous for Americans to visit, it is too dangerous to force Haitians to return.
Revoking TPS is more than an immigration decision. It threatens to separate families, destabilize our communities, and force hardworking individuals back into dangerous conditions. I urge anyone who may potentially be affected by this ruling to contact a qualified immigration attorney immediately to understand their legal options and begin preparing for any changes that may lie ahead.
Although the Supreme Court has given the Trump administration the green light for mass deportations, it is my plea that they will instead create a pathway to citizenship for the hundreds of thousands of TPS holders that contribute so greatly to communities from coast to coast.
My office will be hosting an emergency community town hall to provide updates, connect residents with trusted legal resources, and answer questions during this difficult time. Now more than ever, we must come together to support one another and continue advocating for compassionate, practical solutions that recognize the humanitarian realities facing Haiti.
