Statement from Legislator Solages on Fatal Crash on Southern State Parkway

On Sunday, the Southern State Parkway in Malverne was the site of two more preventable deaths. These are the latest fatalities in “Blood Alley” – a notorious 10-mile stretch of the Southern State where thousands of crashes occur each year and countless lives have been lost.

In this most recent case, the existing peril of this poorly lit, winding, and narrow highway were exacerbated by the actions of an individual who allegedly chose to drive while intoxicated.

As our community grapples with this senseless loss of life, I respectfully urge the New York State Police and the Nassau County Police Department to increase patrols on the Southern State and its connected roadways. This will send a clear message that aggressive, reckless, and impaired driving especially will never be tolerated.

I will continue to work with New York State officials to spearhead necessary infrastructure improvements that will provide long-term solutions for the underlying issues that have made the Southern State one of the most dangerous roadways in our region.
