(PORT WASHINGTON, N.Y.) – Nassau County Legislature Minority Leader Delia DeRiggi-Whitton (D – Glen Cove) and her Minority Caucus colleagues recently thanked Port Washington’s Sadie Muller for interning at the Legislature this summer.

In addition to assisting with constituent concerns in Minority Leader DeRiggi-Whitton’s district office,  Muller applied her passion for the environment toward compiling a report examining environmental and public health inequities in the Towns of Hempstead and North Hempstead.

In addition to analyzing asthma rates and toxic waste burial sites, she took a closer look at rates of food insecurity, use of the Supplemental Nutrition Assistance Program (SNAP) aid and potential impacts of the Trump administration’s “megabill” which cuts hundreds of billions of dollars in aid from that program and a staggering $1 trillion from Medicaid.

Last summer, the Schreiber ’24 graduate spearheaded the Residents Forward pilot composting program at the Science Museum of Long Island and worked with students at Salem Elementary School to reduce food waste at the school.

“Sadie’s analysis brought the issues of economic equity and environmental justice into sharp focus – and the data she compiled shows us just how important it is for Nassau County to get ahead of the Trump administration’s staggering cuts to social safety net programs that Nassau County residents rely on,” Minority Leader DeRiggi-Whitton said. “I am so grateful to this impressive young woman for her hard work, and I look forward to partnering with her on future initiatives that will build a better future.”
