(ATLANTIC BEACH, N.Y.) – Prior to the start of the Nassau County Legislature’s Monday, Oct. 20 meeting, members of the Nassau County Legislature Minority Caucus joined the full Legislature in honoring Nassau County Police Department Fifth Squad Lieutenant Chris Boylan as the Superior Officers Association’s October ‘top cop’ in recognition of life-saving efforts while off-duty to save a young boy from a rip current near a jetty off of Clearwater Beach Club in Atlantic Beach.
“I also had a very good friend – our kids were young – she was in Amagansett on the beach, and she tried to help someone else’s child who as caught in a rip tide, and unfortunately, she drowned with her two children on the beach,” Minority Leader Delia DeRiggi-Whitton (D – Glen Cove) said. “The little boy survived because someone else was able to get to him. You – thank God – had the training. It’s life-and-death a lot of times. I’m very glad you were OK as well as the boy you saved.”
“I am so incredibly proud to know you and what you have done. As the story was being read, it read like a suspense novel. Everything turned out okay, but there was certainly he possibility it wouldn’t,” Alternate Deputy Minority Leader Debra Mulé (D – Freeport) said. “We all know the ocean is unpredictable and when you put yourself in that situation to protect a young boy that you didn’t even know – with your family right there – it’s absolutely incredible. We are so fortunate to have you here in Nassau County as one of our finest.”
“As the son of a police officer, every day, when I watched my dad go to work, I didn’t know if he’d come back – especially with him being in Transit in New York City – but you did this on your day off,” Nassau County Legislator Carrié Solages (D – Valley Stream) said. “However, I’m not surprised – I know you personally from Franklin Square and the Fifth Precinct – and I congratulate you for your sacrifices and service to our community.”
