Drucker Thanks Community For Success Of Long Island Cares Food Drive Honoring Harry Chapin

Long Island Cares NNO

(PLAINVIEW, SYOSSET and JERICHO, N.Y.) - Nassau County Legislature Deputy Minority Leader Arnold W. Drucker (D - Plainview) thanked the communities of District 16 for donating 589 pounds of food in support of his office’s annual summer food drive honoring Harry Chapin’s legacy as a hunger-fighting crusader on Long Island.

During the drive, which ran from Harry Chapin’s July 16 birthday through Aug. 8, residents donated unopened, non-perishable food items at the Plainview-Old Bethpage, Syosset and Jericho Public Libraries. Deputy Minority Leader Drucker also collected donations as part of his office’s National Night Out celebration on Aug. 5 (pictured above).

In April of 2022, Deputy Minority Leader Drucker filed legislation to formally codify July 16 – the date of Chapin’s untimely death in 1981 – as Harry Chapin Day in Nassau County. The measure was never acted upon by the Legislative Majority.

“I have always been awed by the generous hearts of my neighbors in Plainview and all of District 16’s communities, and the success of this community food drive is just the latest example of their giving spirit,” Deputy Minority Leader Drucker said. “As federal cuts continue to jeopardize nutrition assistance programs across Nassau County and the nation, I know that Harry Chapin would take pride in his fellow Long Islanders’ commitment to his mission to ensuring no family ever goes hungry in America.”
