Statement from Nassau County Legislature Deputy Minority Leader Arnold W. Drucker

In light of recent events in Minneapolis, I felt it was not only appropriate, but necessary, to speak up in defense of our values, in support of our laws, and in memory of the loss of our fellow citizens. Immigration enforcement has a place in our legal system, but this effort the current federal government has undertaken is not only a moral affront to our values as Americans and as a community, it has become an egregious flaunting of accountability, legislative oversight, and legal restrictions.

The killings of Renee Good and Alex Pretti happened as a predictable consequence of a cruel, out of control and provocative initiative undertaken by a capricious, vindictive President who has surrounded himself with virulent, incompetent acolytes that have been given a mandate to act as they see fit without repercussion or deference to the law.

In Nassau County, we have long had the privilege of living in the safest County in America, thanks to the tireless dedication of our Nassau County Police Department, who are tremendously competent, rigorously trained, and without exception loyal to their duties of service and their oath to the Constitution. There is no starker contrast to the law enforcement we are used to in Nassau County and that of which we are seeing displayed now throughout the streets of our Country by ICE. And as long as it goes unaddressed, it will continue to grow in scope. In its infancy, we have already seen this unchecked, increasingly untrained, and emboldened agency arrest and detain American citizens by the scores, gratuitous profiling of random people on the street, and the senseless murder of two American citizens, streamed straight to our phones. And then they told us not to believe our eyes. Not to believe the videos they know we all saw, and to accept their narrative of events.

These recent actions are a deep and lasting stain on our country, and should they be allowed to continue, will inevitably keep growing in our direction right here at home. It is imperative we not only continue to condemn these actions when they occur, but demand accountability so that we see to it they cease.
