Drucker Invites Students to Participate in Third Annual Judy Jacobs Essay Award Contest

(MINEOLA, N.Y.) - In honor of Women’s History Month and the legacy of the late Nassau County Legislator and former Presiding Officer Judy Jacobs, Nassau County Legislator Arnold W. Drucker (D - Plainview) is proud to announce the third annual Judy Jacobs Essay Contest for fifth- through eighth-grade students residing in the 16th Legislative District.

In accordance with this year’s theme - “Kindness is Leadership” - students will be tasked with describing what it means to harness kindness as a principle of leadership. Students must select a person who they feel represents a kind leader whether it is a parent, teacher, elected official, community leader or even themselves to write about and how they are creating a kinder and better environment in their community.

“Judy Jacobs was a phenomenal individual who led with compassion and courage throughout her life to make Nassau County better for everybody,” Legislator Drucker said. “Through this year’s essay contest, I hope to continue to honor Judy’s legacy and encourage our young people to be reflect upon actions they can take to foster an environment of acceptance that embraces our diversity as a source of strength.”

The deadline for submissions is Friday, April 8. Contest winners will be announced during an award ceremony at Jericho Public Library on Thursday, April 14.

Official Contest Rules Include: 

  • All students in grades 5 to 8 may participate
  • Must reside within Legislative District 16
  • Submissions should be a minimum of 250 words but not exceed 500 words in length
  • All submissions MUST be accompanied by a completed Participation Agreement
