(SYOSSET, N.Y.) – More than 70 people took advantage of an opportunity to safely dispose of unwanted medications during a Tuesday, April 29 “Shed the Meds” event at the Syosset Public Library sponsored by Nassau County Legislature Deputy Minority Leader Arnold W. Drucker (D - Plainview) and the Nassau County Police Department’s Second Precinct. During the event, residents discarded nine full, large garbage bags of unwanted and/or expired prescription medications at the library under the supervision of Second Precinct Problem Oriented Policing (POP) officers.

This Shed the Meds event was added after Deputy Minority Leader Drucker’s previous March 11 session at the library was cut short by a bomb scare – one that was ultimately proven to be unfounded. Between the two sessions, more than 16 bags of unwanted medication were gathered for safe disposal.

“For the safety of our community and protection of the environment, clearing out our medicine cabinets is one of the most important forms of spring cleaning that we can do – and Shed the Meds events provide a convenient and secure opportunity that ensures unwanted drugs will not fall into the wrong hands,” Deputy Minority Leader Drucker said. “I am so thankful to Sergeant Mardoney and the entire Second Precinct, as well as Syosset Public Library Head of Programming Alisa Fogel and her team, for working so diligently to make this event a tremendously impactful success once again."
