(PLAINVIEW, SYOSSET and JERICHO, N.Y.) - Nassau County Legislature Deputy Minority Leader Arnold W. Drucker (D - Plainview) is once again joining forces with Long Island Cares and the Plainview-Old Bethpage, Syosset and Jericho Public Libraries to host his annual summer food drive in honor of Harry Chapin’s legacy as a hunger-fighting crusader on Long Island.

From Wednesday, July 16 through Friday, August 8, residents are encouraged to donate unopened, non-perishable food items at any of the three participating community drop-off locations. Donations for Baxter’s Pet Pantry will also be accepted in support of their mission to ensure that every member of the family has access to the nutritious food that they need.

In April of 2022, Legislator Drucker filed legislation to formally codify July 16 – the date of Chapin’s untimely death in 1981 – as Harry Chapin Day in Nassau County. The measure was never acted upon by the Legislative Majority.

“In the 44 years since his sudden and tragic death, Harry Chapin’s legacy as a gifted musical storyteller and philanthropist has only blossomed and grown stronger in Nassau County and across Long Island,” Deputy Minority Leader Drucker said. “At a time when funding for federal nutrition assistance programs hangs in the balance, his message and his mission are more important than ever. I am proud to once again be working with Long Island Cares – the food bank Harry launched – and our partners at the Plainview-Old Bethpage, Syosset and Jericho Libraries to honor Harry’s legacy and fulfill his mission of eradicating hunger on Long Island.”

Contact Deputy Minority Leader Drucker’s office at 516-571-6216 or adrucker@nassaucountyny.gov for more details.
