[ARCHIVED] Statements from Legislators Siela A. Bynoe and Arnold W. Drucker Following Announcement Bus Cameras

(MINEOLA, N.Y.) - Last fall, Nassau County Legislators Siela A. Bynoe (D - Westbury) and Arnold W. Drucker (D - Plainview) co-introduced and secured unanimous passage of legislation that allows Nassau County and school districts to enter intermunicipal agreements for the future installation of school bus cameras to record drivers who unlawfully pass stopped school buses.

On Tuesday, Jan. 14, County Executive Curran announced that a Request for Expressions of Interest (RFEI) related to the school bus camera initiative is slated to be released later this week. Following that announcement, Legislators Bynoe and Drucker issued these statements:

“School bus cameras will be a powerful tool for holding motorists that choose to needlessly imperil our children accountable,” Nassau County Legislator Siela A. Bynoe (D - Westbury) said. “By availing ourselves of this important change in state law, Nassau County took an important step forward in our mission of protecting our communities. I will work closely with County Executive Curran, community leaders and residents to ensure the school bus camera initiative is a success.”

“Preserving and enhancing the safety of our children must always be our top priority when we make decisions in the Nassau County Legislature,” Legislator Arnold W. Drucker (D - Plainview), said. “Last fall, we sent a clear message that we will not tolerate selfish driving decisions that put young people at risk. This announcement brings us one step closer to fulfilling that mandate. I will continue working with County Executive Curran and stakeholders across Nassau County to implement a school bus camera program that makes the roads safer for everyone.”
