Legislator Carrié Solages Urges County Executive Mangano to Reverse the Decision Eliminating ‘POP COP’ Unit That Has Been Effective In Addressing Gang and Gun Violence As Well As Other Safety and Quality Of Life Issues
As residents and community leaders express their fears that the ‘POP COP’ cuts will cause an increase in crime, Legislator Solages keeps the pressure on the County Executive Mangano to restore the vital community policing unit.

(MINEOLA, NY) – Legislator Carrié Solages continues his efforts to urge County Executive Ed Mangano to ‘keep his word’ by adhering to the terms of the police consolidation plan that kept the ‘POP’ Problem Orientated Police Unit at the 5th Precinct after significant cuts began two years ago. Following the announcement two weeks ago that the highly-regarded plainclothes unit, responsible for protecting the public against gun violence, gang members, and drug dealers was eliminated, Legislator Solages immediately took action. In response to the outcry from concerned residents, school officials, and local civic leaders, Legislator Solages will hold a Special Emergency Meeting on Tuesday, June 3rd at the Elmont Public Library, 700 Hempstead Turnpike, Elmont, NY from 7 p.m. to 9 p.m.

“My office has been consistently getting phone calls and messages about this matter. The POP Unit was a protective and stabilizing presence in my district providing reassurance to residents,” said Carrie Solages. “My constituents are wondering what will happen to their community now that this vital unit is gone.”
The POP unit serves a vital role in Solages’ district comprising Elmont, Valley Stream, and Inwood as well as parts of South Floral Park and North Woodmere. Legislator Solages sent a strong letter to the County Executive urging him to reverse the cuts and letting him know the outrage and disappointment he and his community are feeling.
