Legislator Carrie Solages participated in a special holiday program handing out Easter meals and toys to veterans and their families in appreciation for their service and sacrifice.

(East Meadow, NY) - Nassau County Legislator Carrie Solages joined Long Island Cares, Inc. and Veterans Protected on Thursday, April 17th distributing Easter meals to veterans and their families. The event took place at the Nassau County Veterans Service Agency in front of the Veterans Affairs Clinic, 2201 Hempstead Turnpike, Building Q in East Meadow. As ranking member of the Nassau County Legislature’s Veterans & Senior Affairs Committee, Solages is an ardent supporter of the men and women in our community who served our nation in the military.
The food bags contained a complete Easter dinner for veterans to prepare at home with their families. For those who have children, toys will be provided from generous donations. It is significant for the families of veterans, especially children, to know they are appreciated because of the support and sacrifices they endured while their loved one was serving. “During this special time of the year when people within our community pause to reflect on sacrifice, giving to our veterans and their families a gesture of sustenance as well as moral support is a great way to say ‘thank you,’” Legislator Solages said.
The sponsors successfully reached their goal of one hundred veterans and their families. Leann Murphy-Baker, head of Veterans Protected, an advocacy organization based in Garden City, shares Solages’ sentiments. “As an American, I’m proud of the veterans that protect our nation. This is my way of giving back and to thank them for their service,” said Murphy-Baker. Michael Haynes, Coordinator of Government Affairs and Veterans Services at Long Island Cares, Inc., said, “It is a privilege to partner with Nassau County Veterans Services and the office of Legislator Carrie Solages in helping to provide veterans and their families with healthy Easter meals.”
Although this is a special event for the holiday, Long Island Cares designates every Tuesday as Military Appreciation Day at their food banks. “Distributing Easter dinner is just one of the many ways Long Island Cares and advocates are letting veterans know that the spirit of camaraderie and community extends beyond their military brothers and sisters. I’m glad to do my part,” Solages said.
