(NEW CASSEL, N.Y.) – Nassau County Legislator Viviana L. Russell (D – Westbury) joined Westbury-New Cassel residents and her colleagues at the Yes We Can Community Center on Wednesday, Feb. 11 for an event commemorating the 100th anniversary of Black History Month in America. The event featured performances of “Lift Every Voice and Sing” by the YWC After School Students; video tributes honoring Black excellence and legacy; spoken word and poetry presentations, African dance performances and a showcase by the Men of Soul.
“Since its opening, it never ceases to thrill me to see how the Yes We Can Community Center has become such a vibrant cultural hub for the residents of New Cassel, Westbury, and the entire Town of North Hempstead – and events such as this Black History Month celebration are just one of the many ways that it unites our communities throughout the year,” Legislator Russell said. “I thank the staff at the Yes We Can Community Center, my colleagues at the Town of North Hempstead and all of the participants who contributed to making this such a rich and inspiring event.”
