Legislators Mulé, Davis and Nuñez – NYS DOT Resurfacing of Sunrise Highway in Design Stage

(VALLEY STREAM, LYNBROOK, ROCKVILLE CENTRE and BALDWIN, N.Y.) – Nassau County Legislature Alternate Deputy Minority Leader Debra Mulé (D – Freeport) and Legislators Cynthia Nuñez (D – Valley Stream) and Scott M. Davis (D – Rockville Centre) are pleased to announce that a major New York State Department of Transportation (NYS DOT) resurfacing project for Sunrise Highway is now in the design phase of its development.

Upon its completion, the project spanning the length of Sunrise Highway from the Cross Island Parkway at the Queens/Nassau border to Harrison Avenue in Baldwin, will yield a completely resurfaced roadway and the installation and improvement of sidewalk curb ramps in accordance with current Americans with Disability Act (ADA) requirements. Work is tentatively expected to begin in the summer of 2026.

“Community members who live and work in Freeport and Baldwin rely upon Sunrise Highway in almost every aspect of their daily lives,” Alternate Deputy Minority Leader Mulé said. “These improvements will go a long way toward making this key thoroughfare safer and more convenient for motorists and pedestrians, and I thank the State for moving this project forward.”

“Sunrise Highway serves as a vital access point for Rockville Centre Village’s commercial district, and this investment in our community will provide vital support for local businesses while improving our quality of life,” Legislator Davis said. “I am very pleased that this important project is moving forward, and I thank New York State for delivering vital resources that will benefit the communities we serve.”

“As the representative for Valley Stream and Lynbrook and as the Ranking Member of the Towns, Villages and Cities committee, I know how critical Sunrise Highway is to residents, commuters, and small businesses who depend on it every day,” Legislator Nuñez said. “This long-awaited resurfacing and the addition of ADA-compliant curb ramps will improve safety, accessibility, and reliability along this corridor. I appreciate our partners at the State for advancing this project and investing in infrastructure improvements that strengthen our communities and enhance everyday quality of life.”
