(MINEOLA, N.Y.) – Faced with the prospect of major federal cuts following the recent passage of the Trump megabill, Nassau County Legislature Alternate Deputy Minority Leader Debra Mulé (D – Freeport) on Monday, July 14 urged Blakeman administration officials to closely monitor grants and safeguard taxpayers from draconian future cuts to County services.
During questioning by Alternate Deputy Minority Leader Mulé prior to a Finance committee vote to allocate millions in federal funds toward offsetting County emergency management operations, administration officials confirmed that the County relies on these funds and said it was unclear how the megabill would impact future funding.
Other items on Monday’s agenda that rely upon federal funding included a $1,714,200 appropriation in federal funding delivered by way of a pass-through grant from the State that supports Nassau’s Women, Infants and Children (WIC) nutrition assistance program, which serves more than 5,000 clients at sites in Glen Cove and Hempstead. The federal megabill includes $300 billion in cuts to the Supplemental Nutrition Assistance Program (SNAP), impacting approximately 150,000 at-risk Long Islanders.
“The cuts in Trump’s megabill and his administration’s assault upon essential federal functions are poised to shred safety net programs here in Nassau County and across the nation and undermine the stability of vital supports that County governments have long relied upon,” Alternate Deputy Minority Leader Mulé said. “Now is the time for the Blakeman administration, the Legislature and the County Comptroller’s office to determine exactly how these cuts will impact Nassau County so that we can preserve the essential services that residents rely upon.”
