(FREEPORT, N.Y.) – Nassau County Legislature Alternate Deputy Minority Leader Debra Mulé (D – Freeport) proudly joined fellow parishioners at Our Holy Redeemer R.C. Church in Freeport on Sunday, Oct. 12 for their annual Hispanic Heritage Month celebration.
During the event, which coincided with el Día de la Raza, a holiday recognizing the mixed indigenous and European heritage of Mexico, the late Nemencio Rodriguez and Antonia Espinal Rodriguez were recognized for spearheading Freeport’s first Spanish mass, which was held in 1968. Many of their descendants, representing several generations of their family, attended the celebration.
In addition to the special service, the church served a global array of cuisines to help raise funds for local families in need. Alternate Deputy Minority Leader Mulé and Legislator Seth I. Koslow (D – Merrick) presented Nassau County Legislature Citations to congratulate the organizers for their efforts.
“Hispanic Heritage Month is time to celebrate our nation’s vibrant tapestry of cultures and how they enrich Freeport and communities across Nassau County,” Alternate Deputy Minority Leader Mulé said. “Thank you to everyone at Our Holy Redeemer who worked diligently to organize a beautiful event that honors our diversity and shared heritage.
