(FREEPORT and HEMPSTEAD, N.Y.) – Nassau County Legislator Scott M. Davis (D – Rockville Centre) joined the Theta Iota Omega Chapter of the Alpha Kappa Alpha Sorority, Inc. at Bethel AME Church in Freeport on Tuesday, July 7 for a bench dedication ceremony honoring longtime educator and community advocate Wilma Holmes Tootle.
Tootle, who served as Alpha Kappa Alpha’s 28th North Atlantic Regional Director and 3rd International Regional Director, is a Tuskegee University graduate who held numerous educational and leadership roles at Hempstead High School and previously served as an Immediate Past President of the National Coalition of 100 Black Women’s Long Island Chapter. She currently serves as the Secretary of ERASE Racism.
“For people like me who grew up in Hempstead and remain deeply connected to the community, Wilma Holmes Tootle has been a constant presence and a beacon of leadership whose advocacy has touched countless lives and uplifted them for the better,” Legislator Davis said. “It was such a pleasure to celebrate one of Nassau County’s true living legends, and I join our community in saluting Wilma and thank the Theta Iota Omega Chapter of Alpha Kappa Alpha for bringing us together for such a joyous occasion!”
