(HEMPSTEAD, N.Y.) – Nassau County Legislator Scott M. Davis (D – Rockville Centre) joined Hempstead SNUG and the Family & Children’s Association (FCA) at the Mental Health Association in Hempstead on Friday, June 12 for their annual Fish Fry in honor of Gun Violence Awareness Month.
SNUG, which is “guns” spelled backwards, is an evidence-based violence prevention initiative that works with residents, businesses, and community-based organizations to reduce and prevent shootings and killings. FCA works collaboratively with the Village of Hempstead and community leaders to conduct outreach, intervene in conflicts, and promote alternatives to violence. In addition to free food, arts and crafts and other family-friendly attractions, the event featured free screenings aboard a mobile health clinic, which Legislator Davis availed himself of during his visit.
“Parents and community stakeholders all share our society’s most important mission – and that is protecting our children and loved ones from the scourge of gun violence,” Legislator Davis said. “As a Hempstead native myself, it is heartening to see how grassroots, collaborative initiatives like SNUG are making meaningful strides that make all of us safer in our daily lives.”
