(BALDWIN, N.Y.) – Before the start of the Monday, May 19 meeting of the Nassau County Legislature, Alternate Deputy Minority Leader Debra Mulé (D – Freeport) joined her colleagues in congratulating the Nassau County Police Benevolent Association (PBA)’s May Top Cops for their life-saving work in Baldwin.
On March 10, First Precinct police officers were dispatched a call for an auto accident involving a pedestrian struck in Baldwin. Upon arrival, Officer James Havens discovered a semiconscious young male on the ground, bleeding heavily due to a severe laceration on his right arm.
Because of the location and the severity of the wound, a tourniquet could not be applied. However, Officer Havens – a volunteer firefighter - carries a bleed-stop kit and swiftly applied a hemostatic dressing and bandage. He applied constant pressure on the wound until Baldwin Fire Department ambulance responded and transported the victim to South Nassau Hospital, where he was stabilized and received life-saving surgery in the ensuing weeks.
“Havens did such a good job that the doctors were emailing us about what a good job that he did. The Baldwin Fire Department also reached out to us and gave him an award at their installation dinner. He did an incredible job,” NCPD First Precinct Inspector Greg Stephanoff said.
“This is just another example of the tremendous work that our first responders do. Because you, in addition to the police training, also had the fire department training, you doubly put yourself out there to save people’s lives,” Alternate Deputy Minority Leader Mulé said. “I second that suggestion to equip all of our police officers with the bleed-stop kits and hemostatic dressings that were used to save this young boy’s life and thank Officer Havens for his outstanding work.”
