(ROCKVILLE CENTRE, N.Y.) – Nassau County Legislator Scott M. Davis (D – Rockville Centre) joined with the Rockville Centre community and his colleagues in village government on Monday, Jan. 15 to commemorate Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr. Day at Rockville Centre’s Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. Community Center.

The standing-room-only event included an afternoon of inspiring speeches from a multigenerational roster of speakers, performances in honor of Dr. King’s legacy, and a community meal to conclude the festivities.

Joining Legislator Davis in attendance were representatives of Rockville Centre Mayor Francis X. Murray; Village Trustees Kathleen Baxley, Emilio F. Grillo, Gregory P. Shaughnessy and Kate Conlon; former New York State Assemblywoman Judy Griffin; and Gwynne Feiner, Co-Director of the Village’s Department of Public Works. Local educational leaders, including South Side Middle School Principal Shelagh McGinn and Assistant Superintendent for Human Resources John Murphy were also on hand.

Legislator Davis currently serves as Vice President of the RVC Friends of MLK, a not-for-profit organization which is dedicated to supporting and growing youth, adult, senior, and community programming for Rockville Centre’s Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr. Community Center. Since opening in 1971, the Center has developed a schedule of academic, social, and support programs for youth, teens, adults, seniors, and the greater community.

“Rockville Centre’s MLK Community Center is a vibrant extension of Dr. King’s lifelong pursuit of equality, empowerment, and dignity for every marginalized member of our society. This year’s celebration offered a heartwarming reminder that his mission lives on in all of us, and especially within the young people who will soon lead our society,” Legislator Davis said. “Thank you to Director Patrick Morris, Assistant Director Sharon Sheppard, and Karen Mobley for organizing a moving program that honors Dr. King and imparts his crucial message into the minds of our next generation of leaders in our community.”
