(HEMPSTEAD, N.Y.) – Nassau County Legislators Scott M. Davis (D – Rockville Centre), Olena Nicks (D – Uniondale) and Viviana L. Russell (D – Westbury) applauded the Monday, Sept. 14 enactment of a $125,000 STOP-DWI Foundation grant for the Hempstead Police Department.
Under the contract, Hempstead P.D. will receive $25,000 per year annually through 2030 to bolster checkpoints during holiday periods, with a focus on preventing roadway injuries and fatalities caused by impaired driving. The grant program is administered by the Governor’s Traffic Safety Board.
“One traffic accident or fatality caused by drunk or impaired driving is one too many, and the STOP DWI initiative has contributed greatly toward our efforts to end this entirely preventable epidemic,” Legislator Davis said. “By accepting these funds, Nassau County and Hempstead Village are making it clear that, if you drive impaired, you will be held accountable for your actions.”
“As a longtime member of the Uniondale Fire Department, I have been a firsthand witness to the horrors of what can happen because of drunk and impaired driving,” Legislator Nicks said. “These funds will save lives, and I appreciate the Governor’s Traffic Safety Board for administrating this vital grant program.”
“By equipping local police departments to conduct enhanced patrol operations, the STOP-DWI Foundation is helping us keep drunk and impaired drivers off the road – and holding anyone who breaks the law accountable,” Legislator Russell said. “I am glad to see the continued participation of New York State’s largest village in this critical public safety initiative.”
