[ARCHIVED] Minority Legislators, Leader Abrahams, Come out Against CE Mangano’s Property Tax Increase

Democrats say prior to Thursdays first Budget Hearing that they will be a ‘NO Vote’ on the ‘County Executive’s High Tax – Pro Casino Proposed Budget’ that attacks both Nassau Residents’ quality of life and wallets

(Mineola, NY) – Nassau County Democratic Legislator Kevan Abrahams and the Democratic Legislative Minority Caucus announced Tuesday that they are a ‘NO” vote on any budget that includes a property tax to Nassau residents.

“It’s clear that Nassau residents are feeling the pinch of high taxes and the thought that the Republican administration can’t come up with $12 million dollars’ worth of spending cuts in a $3 billion dollar budget so to avoid a County tax hike is simply ridiculous and frankly unacceptable,” voiced Democratic Minority Leader Kevan Abrahams.

“While we will speak to the many reasons we are against the County Executive’s presently proposed ‘High Tax – Pro Casino Budget that attacks Nassau residents’ quality of life and their wallets’ over the coming days and weeks we want it to be clear: this high tax budget has to go and if the County Executive can’t come up with $12 million dollars of spending cuts in his budget then we will be forced to propose some ourselves,” exclaimed Legislative Abrahams.

Over the last few weeks the Democratic Legislative Minority caucus has been outspoken about their position on casinos coming to Nassau. “We believe there is NO community in Nassau that is appropriate for a casino and therefore will NOT support video lottery terminals better known as ‘VLT’’s to be placed either temporarily or permanently in any neighborhood in this County,” said Kevan Abrahams.

The first budget hearing is called for this Thursday, October 8th at 1pm at the Theodore Roosevelt Nassau County Executive & Legislative Building, 1550 Franklin Ave, Mineola, NY. Democratic Legislators are encouraging that over taxed residents and working families who cannot afford higher taxes while their quality of life plummets to join them at the hearing.

“It’s time we come together against this insanity. Enough is enough! Let’s call this budget what it is: a ‘High Tax – Pro Casino Budget that attacks Nassau residents’ quality of life and their wallets’. There is only one way to fight it; show-up and be heard this Thursday,” concluded Legislator Abrahams.
